New battleground over zero-hours contracts

There is no rest for the Government as unions continue the battle to ban controversial zero-hour contracts.

Unions are accusing the security industry of being one of the worst zero hour contract offenders. The union represents many security workers.

Zero-hours mean workers are required to be available for work but are not guaranteed any hours of work.

National director Mike Treen says companies are putting all of the risk onto their staff by using what are effectively zero-hour contracts.

He says an employee may have ongoing regular work, but if their company's contract changes or a manager at a business they're working at doesn't like them, they'll be out on their ear.

"There's no review of anything that may or may not have gone wrong. There's no explanation of why you're being pulled from a site, you just get pulled from a site because you're told that you're no longer wanted there."

Treen believes the Government needs a clause when contracting private companies for government work "that people should be engaged on regular permanent employment agreements with regular permanent hours."
