Miners hurting from job losses

There's no quick solution to more potential job losses on the West Coast.

Solid Energy is meeting with Stockton Mine workers and the Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union this afternoon about a likely restructure.

Union spokesman Garth Elliot says it's a hard time for everyone.

"Very wary, and they've been worried about this for quite some time. It's a tough situation so everyone is on tenterhooks at the moment, waiting on what that announcement might be."

Elliot says while there are factors at play beyond anyone's control, the company was mishandled.

"We can certainly understand where they're coming from but it doesn't take away the responsibility of solid energy and the government and the board of directors from two or three years ago. They've got to hang their heads in shame."

Buller Mayor Garry Howard says there is work behind the scenes on possible new job opportunities to keep families in the area.

"There's no easy solution and there's no quick solution. We're a long way away from anything concrete at this stage."

Howard says there is a bit of resentment in the community towards the company.

"The company has a huge problem and needs to face it. It can't just keep on keeping on losing money. So there's a reality check as well. People don't like it, and families are certainly hurt."
