The Green Party is calling for a Commerce Commission inquiry after it emerged companies were packaging and passing off caged eggs as more expensive free range eggs.

THE SOAP BOX: Cage fight proves baffling for politicians at top of pecking order

Green MP Mojo Mathers has written to the Commission asking them to look into the matter.

She said New Zealanders should be able to trust that when they buy free-range eggs, they’re actually free range.

Mathers said an inquiry is necessary to protect genuine free-range farmers at risk of losing public trust in their product.

Supermarket giant Countdown has pulled all Palace Poultry eggs from its shelves, and is carrying out its own investigation.

The Serious Fraud Office is investigating Palace Poultry, however the company denies any wrongdoing.
