Warehouse denies censorship claims

UPDATED 8.10AM: The Warehouse is denying claims of censorship with a ban on R18 video games.

Games like Grand Theft Auto will be taken off the shelves at The Warehouse and Noel Leeming.

Chief executive Mark Powell told Mike Hosking they're not playing moral police.

"We're not saying it should be banned from other stores - that's a wider social debate that will go on I'm sure, especially today on White Ribbon Day."

Mark Powell says the company is just making decisions about which products it sells.

"How can you sell Grand Theft Auto, for example, and claim you're a family-friendly company?" he says.

Video gamers are planning to boycott the store.

Lower Hutt gamer Rob Bovey has been a loyal Warehouse customer - and says he's among the world's top Grand Theft Auto players.

"I'll be putting on my social page within GTA [Grand Theft Auto] encouraging everyone that plays games to boycott The Warehouse," he said.

Rob Bovey says The Warehouse is abusing its dominant retail position, and removing consumer choice.
