Forecasted building boom a problem for industry

New Zealand doesn't have the tradespeople needed to meet the massive building growth that's coming our way.

According to the latest National Construction Pipeline Report, building and construction activity is set to peak at an all-time high of around $37 billion next year.

It will top $200 billion over the next six.

Association boss Grant Florence reports there's not enough skilled tradespeople to meet the current demand in the industry and there's no short term fix to finding them.

"They need to undertake some training and some experience and so unfortunately it's not as though we can turn the tap on today and have skilled trades people tomorrow," Mr Florence said.

"We're struggling particularly in the higher volume markets of Auckland and to a lesser extent Christchurch now. We're struggling to get skilled tradespeople back at the levels currently."

The report predicts 80,000 homes will be built in Auckland over the next six years, up from 30,000 built over the past six.
