Disabled people are facing poverty as they battle to get employment.

A report reveals more than 70 per cent of people with disabilities can't get or retain work despite their best efforts.

Maxim Institute CEO Alex Penk said some employers see hiring disabled people as a risk.

He said this forces many to rely on the benefit, which often isn't enough to cover their living and medical costs, and he is urging companies to change their tune.

"They might need particular equipment or software, but often the barrier they are facing is just one of perception of an employer thinking it is too hard or too expensive to employ them."

Penk said solutions to the issues disabled workers present usually cost employers less than $750.

"There are actual real benefits for employers. People with disabilities often make really good employees who are loyal, who are committed."

A report earlier this year found that disabled New Zealanders earn close to half what able-bodied people earn a week.
