Demand for Kiwi produce in Korea growing

UPDATED 5.20pm The playing field's looking a bit more level for New Zealand exporters to South Korea.

A Free Trade agreement with the country has seen more tariffs brought down for goods such as kiwifruit, methanol, buttercup squash, and race horses.

Korea's now New Zealand’s 6th largest export market, worth $1.5 billion last year.

Export NZ executive director Catherine Beard said some of New Zealand's biggest exports will see bigger returns from the country.

"Korea was one market where we had been lagging behind other countries in terms of our access - meat was finding it pretty tough going into Korea previously with tariffs but that's all been improved significantly with this Free Trade agreement," she said.

She said Korea's a great market for Kiwifruit exporters.

"Back in 2014 we exported $43.4 million worth of kiwifruit to Korea and historically they were facing reasonable tariffs so [it's] pretty great for that sector."

She said markets in Asia have a demand for certain health foods, which includes kiwifruit.
