Another Christmas shopping record set

Christmas shoppers have set another spending record, swiping their cards more times in a single hour than ever before.

Paymark figures show yesterday's midday to 1 o'clock hour broke the previous record - set the day before - with 10,200 transactions every single minute.

Paymark's Paul Brislen said Christmas spending's up 7.6 percent on last year.

These figures don't include online shopping.

"That is rising hugely as well. When the wash up is done at the end of the year it will be quite a bit larger than what we are looking at here."

What the record breaking numbers suggest is that people are buying up on things that can't be brought overseas.

Paymark says spending at appliance stores is up a massive 33 percent on last year, and hardware stores up 14 percent.

Meanwhile, online shopping seems to have affected spending at New Zealand-based clothes stores, with totals down 4 percent on last year.

Spending at watch and jewellery stores is down 2.9 percent.

Brislen said there are some things you just want to try before you buy, and for many, that's not the case for clothes.

"You're quite happy to say yep, I'll take that, have it delivered and if you don't like it, return it. That's quite an interesting trend for retailers to keep an eye on."

Paymark represents about 75 per cent of all payments terminals.

On Thursday, a record was sent for the most spent electronically in one day, with a little over $282 million spent.
