UPDATED 4.17pm: The body of a 17-year-old girl believed to have been hit by a car on Otorohanga’s main street overnight has been removed from the scene by hearse.

A Maori security guard followed the vehicle and said a prayer as it departed.

The girl's body was discovered early this morning outside a house where a party had been held.

A motorist who drove past the scene as the ambulance was arriving just after 6.30am said the girl’s clothes were in disarray and she was lying on an incline.

“She was lying, kinked over in a weird position. You could tell the prognosis was not good,” he said.

“There were remnants of a big party, quite a lot of beer bottles lying on the road, and on the grass on the side of the road.”

Police have been at the scene throughout the day attempting to determine exactly what happened, and they believe a vehicle was involved in the incident.

Detective senior sergeant Ross Patterson said police were now making inquiries to establish which vehicle was involved.

Senior sergeant Patterson said it was believed the girl was attending one of the parties on the street and was walking home when the incident occurred.

"When she was found she was alone obviously and some of the other young people walking home found her."

He was unable to confirm if the young girl, who is local to the area, had been walking by herself.

A group of three teenager girls said they were at a different party further down the road last night.

They said they were shocked to hear about what had happened.

Sahfia Tioriori said she had found out about the incident through Facebook.

She said the incident was devastating.

Another girl said she had family living in the cordoned area who said they had heard car noises early this morning.

"They didn't hear anything apart from a big crash."

She said she was friends with some of the girls family members.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may seen anything this morning or have information about what happened.
