Motorists going in and out of the Waterview Tunnel have been heavy on the accelerator, clocking up nearly $1 million in fines in the first six weeks the route opened.

Police data released on Monday showed that the four speed cameras at each entrance and exit of the tunnel issued 9756 infringement notices from July 21 - the day the cameras went live - to August 31.

The total fees generated by the cameras was $948,220.

Police estimate that it's six in every 1000 vehicles getting clocked for going faster than the posted 80 km/h speed limit.

More than 1.5 million vehicle trips were recorded through the Waterview Tunnel in that six-week period.

National manager of road policing, Superintendent Steve Greally, says it was important to release the infringement data due to the high level of public interest and to reiterate the need to drive safely and to the conditions.

"Unfortunately, the data shows that a large number of road users are simply driving too fast," he said.

"The speed limit set for Waterview Tunnel is there to keep all road users safe and a crash would likely cause significant harm and traffic disruption."

Greally rejected claims of revenue-gathering, pointing out all money taken from speed camera fines across New Zealand went to central government coffers.

"Success to police would be issuing no infringements," he said.

The Waterview Tunnel's speed cameras puts them among the busiest in the country.

Ngauranga Gorge in Wellington collected $2.387 million in 2016-17, followed by Great South Road, Otahuhu ($2.019 million), Whitford Brown Avenue, Porirua ($1.455 million) and West Coast Road, Henderson ($1.239 million).
