Transdev confused over strike motivations

The head of Auckland's train operator is disappointed in a threat by workers to strike.

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union announced yesterday its members have overwhelmingly voted for strike action over a proposed driver-only operation.

Workers worry that ditching train managers and ticket inspectors will put passenger safety at risk.

Transdev managing director Michel Ladrak said the roles will be replaced by Transport Officers so union members are missing the point.

"I don't have any evidence that driver door operations will be unsafe. I think it is more to do with making sure they find jobs. So I'm really disappointed."

The strike action is being supported by the Public Transport Users Association

The association's coordinator Jon Reeves said while a strike would inconvenience commuters, safety is a priority.

"If that is what is required to drive the message home that everyone is taking safety as the major issue, then maybe that's what's going to be needed."

However, Transdev believes that removing the train operators will improve safety.

The company said on-board roles, like train managers and ticket inspectors, will be replaced by Transport Officers.

They'll move between trains to keep an eye on passenger safety and fare evasion.

Ladrak said his staff will be prioritised in recruitment for new jobs.

"Let's see how we can get these people into those jobs, and at the safe time, offer the public a system that gives them more security because we will be putting staff where they're most needed."
