Auckland's waterfront will be the focal point for celebrations of the city's 175th anniversary today.

Formal European settlement began in 1840.

Mayor Len Brown says it's an important occasion being marked in many ways.

"Hugely significant. A lot of big anniversary celebrations, and then on top of that you've got things like Laneway."

The mayor says one particular highlight will be the 175th Anniversary Day regatta.

"Of course, the traditional yachting and we're hoping to see a few waka on the harbour this time."

Other official celebrations will take place on the Auckland waterfront.
