The cruise ship industry believes million of dollars are at risk if extensions to Auckland's Bledisloe Wharf are delayed.
Auckland Council has agreed to the Port's offer to extend the eastern side of Bledisloe Wharf, but delay construction on the western side pending a council report.
Cruise New Zealand chairman Kevin O’Sullivan says the so-called "compromise" jeopardises upcoming visits from big cruise ships.
The brand new ship Ovation of the Seas announced its visit only two weeks ago.
"It puts in doubt the possibility of the new generation of cruise ships even coming to Auckland. And if it doesn't come to Auckland, it doesn't come to New Zealand," he says.
But Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse disagrees, saying cruise ships don't berth at the Ports' cargo area. She believes cargo ships are more important to Auckland than cruise ships.
"There are other places that the cruise ships can be berthed and we'll work with the Ports company on that."
O'Sullivan says Ports have already ruled that out.
"We had hoped that there might be some other solutions, for example using a cargo wharf, but Ports have advised that won't be feasible."
