Auckland dog owners on social media are advising others to avoid Western Park in Ponsonby after they say a dog died from consuming rat poison in the area.
Community group I Love Ponsonby took to Facebook to say its working to have the poison removed.
One person says they saw a homemade sign notifying people of the use of poison last weekend and has urged the Council, if it's responsible, to make it clearer if there are dangers in the park.
Amanda Easterbrook, owner of dog walking business Sticks and Bones, says people need to keep a close eye on what their pooch picks up.
"Its just about watching them and just making sure they're not picking something up that's unsafe and shouldn't be. If they seem to be sniffing in an area more than they normally would that's a cue for you to call them away."
