Auckland motorists are being urged not to pay young people who wash windows at busy intersections.
The council is asking them to refuse any window-washing offers, and report and photograph people who wash their car without their consent.
Central bylaws manager Adrian Wilson said young people are putting themselves and motorists at risk.
He said they see it as quite harmless, but they could cause accidents by forcing motorists to try to avoid them.
Some of the window-washers are teenagers skipping school, or working after school, when busy intersections are the most dangerous.
A 13-year-old boy who had been reported missing by their parents was found window-washing on one street corner.
Auckland Council's advice for motorists who encounter window washers
1. Make it clear that you don’t want your window washed – shake head or say no
2. Roll up your car windows and don’t engage in conversation
3. If they continue to wash your car and demand payment in an intimidating way, make a complaint to the council by phoning 09 301 0101
4. Take a photo on your phone of the offender and send to the council or Police
5. In cases of criminal activity such as assault or wilful damage, call 111.
