Michael Tavares perched in a kauri tree in west Auckland to save it from the chainsaw, and believes the law around tree protection is ripe for change.
He says since coming down from the tree he's heard stories from around the country which have convinced him there's more to do.
"Rather than climb every tree around the country, my colleagues and I have called for a national day of action for people to go to areas where they have beautiful tress that are either in danger or could be in danger."
