Flounder falls from sky, lands on man in spa

A fishy situation went down in Auckland today.

Local man Russell Hogg was having a relaxing afternoon with his kids at the Parnell Baths today, floundering around in the adult spa pool, when something entirely unexpected happened.

A live, two kilogram flounder fell from the sky and hit him in the face.

"It sorta skimmed me and then [there was] a slap on the water and I thought maybe a kid had done a bomb into the pool. It was a massive slap, everyone was like 'what was that?'"

Hogg says everyone around him was shocked, before laughing at the bizarre - and likely once in a lifetime - situation.

He thinks a large heron or crane flying above lost its grip on its dinner.

"It landed with a great force from quite high up and no-one's got a half-dead flounder in their hand when they go to Parnell Baths," he told the NZ Herald.

After taking a few pictures he threw it over the wall for the seagulls to eat.

"A couple of them tried to pick it up but they couldn't so it was obviously something big like a heron or a crane that had picked up from Mission Bay or somewhere."

Although he chuckles about it, Hogg could have been seriously hurt by the flying fish, which he estimated weighed a couple of kilograms.

"I'm pretty accident-prone as it is," he said. "I think maybe I should buy a lottery ticket tonight. It's not something that happens every day, is it?"

Hogg said he wasn't injured or fazed by the situation - he had bigger fish to fry.
