Fletcher Building has jumped on board the Auckland Council's scheme to boost youth employment.

It's the first employer to sign the Mayor's employment pledge, which eventually aims to see 23,000 young people in jobs.

Josh White is at Golden Bay Cement where Fletchers CEO Mark Adamson says so far this year nine young people will be taking up jobs next year.

"Mark Adamson said that he's got plenty of GIB board, plenty of building materials, plenty of cement, and the one thing he doesn't have plenty of at the moment is people and this will fill a big gap in the labour they need."

Mayor Len Brown says he's expecting many more companies to rush in behind Fletchers.
