Decontamination of sewage covered homes continues

A broken pipe on Auckland's North Shore has been fixed, but the damage of leaked sewage remains.

Wastewater including faecal matter flowed from a burst pipe and made it sway through stormwater drains to Milford Beach.

It's forced the council to make the whole bay a no-swim zone.

But with the city's scorching 29 degree heat, one swimmer told ZB yesterday that was too much of a sacrifice. She said she would rather cross her fingers and shower well after taking a dip.

However, the lack of a swim is little compared to the damage caused to 13 nearby properties.

Workers will today be decontaminating homes that were affected by the sewage flow.

Residents of two homes were so badly affected they've had to spend the night away from their wastewater-logged properties.

Watercare Acting Chief Operations Officer Mark Bourne said they've fixed the pipe, but there's still plenty of work to do.

"We'll be back cleaning up the areas that we haven't done, and in the day's ahead we will periodically be checking on the properties as well."

The repairs were held up by a number of telecommunication and electrical cables in the same area.

Four houses in total were asked to evacuate, including Zafer Isiklar's.

He said yesterday it was three hours before someone turned up after repeated calls to Auckland Council and Watercare.

"I saw the postman in our garden and knocking on our door saying our house was covered with the water and sh** from the sewage and he just warned us to stay in our house."
