Auckland's Cricket World Cup fan trail is a win-win for fans and motorists.

Mayor Len Brown's announced a 4.4 kilometre walking route from the city to Eden Park, featuring entertainment along the way.

Auckland Transport major events spokesman John Strawbridge says there's no need to close roads to facilitate the trail.

"With the very nature of One Day International cricket, not everyone arrives at once as well."

John Strawbridge says there will still be safety measures along the route to keep fans and vehicles well clear of each other.

Meanwhile, Auckland Transport believes the next market for its HOP card, is Aussie league fans.

The council organisation's using the NRL Nines weekend next month to trial a visitor version of the pass.

Strawbridge says they're offering the pass through the same platform as game tickets.

"Most of the visitors are coming from Australia, so they get Ticketek as an outlet."

John Strawbridge says half of all visitors to this year's Nines used public transport - and they expect more to next month.
