A new survey suggests a majority of Aucklanders now support using motorway tolls and fuel taxes to fund a major expansion of the city's transport network.
The Colmar Brunton survey of 5000 people found 58 percent of people prefer the Auckland Plan Transport Network over minimal spending on transport.
57 percent of the people surveyed preferred motorway tolls to fuel taxes and rate increases.
Transport Funding Independent Advisory Board's Peter Winder says the survey sends an unequivocal message to councillors.
"We've considered this survey along with 27,000 submissions on the ten year budget and come to a view as to the level of investment that they can afford."
Winder says there's public support for fuel taxes and tolls.
"When I went to school 51 percent is an absolute majority and we're talking about levels of support that are higher than that, so this is a clear preference."
