Bledisloe Wharf battle heading to court

UPDATED 9.15am: The he-said she-said over planned extensions to Ports of Auckland is heading to court today.

Urban Auckland is seeking an interim injunction to halt an extension to the eastern side of the wharf, during a three-day hearing at the High Court in Auckland.

The port company has delayed an extension to western side of the wharf, but is currently extending the eastern side.

Ports of Auckland spokesman Matt Ball says the idea of proceeding with one extension and delaying the other came from Urban Auckland chairwoman Julie Stout.

He says Ms Stout "put forward the idea that we should only build one wharf extension".

But she says it was an interim measure "to stop work in one way".

Urban Auckland claims the port's consents are illegal because the public hadn't been adequately consulted.

But Matt Ball says the port has asked for public feedback and has followed the law every step of the way.

"We've been talking about this for three years now," he says.

"We put forward a number of alternatives to reduce the areas we're asking for."

The case could raise legal questions about Auckland Council's resource consent process.

Julie Stout says the group is challenging the lack of public notification in the public resource consent process.

"We are questioning the whole resource consent process the council have adopted in looking at these proposed port extensions."
