People enjoying the view from the top of Auckland's Mt Eden seem mostly relaxed at an imminent ban on private vehicles near the summit.

The Maunga Authority has voted to ban private cars, to help save the peak from erosion.

No date has yet been set for the ban.

Reporter Michael Sergel gauged reaction from those using the popular spot this morning.

"It really depends on the age of the people concerned. For the younger people I spoke to who run, walk or cycle up the Mountain, they said they wouldn't be affected by the loss of the car park."

Sergel did find older visitors admitted it may be difficult for them to enjoy the mountain if they were unable to take their car up to the summit.

"An older couple in their seventies I spoke to said they wouldn't be able to visit if the car park was closed. They suggested perhaps it should only be open to people with SuperGold cards or mobility stickers."

Sergel also spoke to a group of Chinese tourists, who say they wouldn't be affected as they enjoyed the walk up.
