Auckland Transport wants to hike the price of its parking fines.
The organisation has unveiled a new parking strategy - a 40-page document which it's consulting on. It states the value of parking infringement fines is very low and no longer acting as a deterrent.
Parking Services Manager Russell Derecourt says the fines are set nationally, so Auckland Transport is in talks with the Ministry of Transport to change the law.
"We have a number of examples with individuals who do not buy a parking ticket, they just pull up and park and realise they're going to get an infringement notice," he said.
Derecourt says Auckland Transport has received a lot of submissions on the issue, including from those concerned about the so-called 'privatisation' of public land.
But he says the organisation is committed to protecting parking for residential owners.
"So for an annual fee, they get an ability to get that permit to be exempt from time restrictions that we'll put in place."
