Anae concerned with motorway unhappiness

The question of housing, or motorways, or both, is being put to Aucklanders.

It comes after a University of Canterbury study shows people living next to south Auckland motorways are unhappy with their future health, and quality of life.

Manukau councillor Arthur Anae says it's a tough discussion, because the city needs both infrastructure and houses.

"We have to face the reality of life. It is essential for us to move forward, we need the roads developed."

Anae says denser housing and big motorways are a necessary evil in a city like Auckland.

"Those who don't want to put up with it or have a fear of it have an option of moving elsewhere.

"I know it sounds like tough talk, but unfortunately that's the way of life."

Anae says it's the first he's heard of the issue - as people in the area aren't very outspoken.

He says when rates increase, his constituents tend to move on without raising complaints.
