The New Zealand Principals' Federation says the decision to sack the Board of Trustees at Moerewa School in Northland is a sad day for self-managing schools and their communities. Mike Eru has taken over the management of the school as commissioner. Federation Vice-President Phil Harding says rather than being celebrated for its efforts and excellent ERO reports, the Moerewa School Board has been punished, and its senior students excluded from their school of choice. "I think dialogue would've solved this problem. If the ministry had been willing to sit down and collaborate with that school and strengthen their practice, then there would've been no need for this to happen." Mr Harding says this represents a lost opportunity for the Ministry to get alongside a high performing school to fine-tune its assessment processes. Photo: Minister of Education Hekia Parata.
