The death of a motorcyclist near Upper Hutt will be investigated by a coroner.
A 40-year-old man flipped off his Harley-Davidson after braking on a straight stretch of State Highway 2.
He bounced at least once before hitting the wire median barrier and dying at the scene.
Inspector Mike Hill says the man was driving amongst a 210-rider-strong Ulysses-organised fundraising ride for Wellington Free Ambulance.
"He was amongst a larger group. Now whether he was formally part of that group travelling or whether he'd caught up with them, those full details are being worked through and we are now investigating on behalf of the coroner."
