17 staff, most of them part timers, have lost their jobs at Christchurch Art Gallery.
The gallery reviewed its staffing requirements when it became clear it will not be reopening until some time in 2013.
While the art gallery played a pivotal role as the Civil Defence headquarters after the earthquake, it's now undergoing extensive repairs.
Staff have been working on a series of projects, including enhancing collection information and digitising archives and records.
Many of these projects are nearly completed now.
