The trial of a Zimbabwean man charged with the sexual violation and murder of his 10-year-old niece is underway in the High Court in Christchurch. George Gwaze is facing two charges of sexual violation and one of murder, following the death of Charlene Makaza at a house in Christchurch in January 2007. Earlier today he pleaded not guilty to all three charges. Justice French told the jurors it's the second time the 60 year old has been tried, but urges them not to speculate why it's a re-trial. She warned the jury not to look up on the internet about what happened at the earlier trial and to come fresh to the case. The trial is expected to take up to four weeks. Photo: NZ Herald |
