Govt wants Tribunal to speed up findings

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Political News | Thursday August 2 2012 15:29

The Government wants the Waitangi Tribunal to speed up its findings on the Maori Council water rights claim.

That's because of timing constraints the Government is operating under if it wants to start the sell off of shares in Mighty River Power this year.

Finance Minister Bill English says he wants to be able to consider the recommendations and reasons in good faith, so he's asked it to provide its recommendations and reasoning by August 24.

"We've just sent them a memorandum today seeing if they can get their views clear and in front of the Government within a couple weeks, sooner than they might've been planning."

But the Waitangi Tribunal isn't commenting on the hurry up it's been given by the Government.

A spokesman says the Tribunal doesn't discuss cases outside the written judgements it provides.
