Shearer confident Shane Jones will be cleared

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Friday June 1 2012 7:31

David Shearer is predicting Shane Jones will be cleared by an Auditor-General's investigation.

The senior Labour MP is the subject of a formal inquiry over his 2008 approval of a citizenship application lodged by Chinese businessman Bill Liu.

Shane Jones says he's not made any decisions about his political future but is concerned the investigation could take a year to complete as he doesn't think he can park up his life for that long.

The party's leader is confident Shane Jones will be back..

"My very, very strong feeling is that the investigation will find nothing wrong and Shane will come back on the front bench. He's a valuable member of our team and I want to get him back into action again."

Mr Shearer sees no reason for his senior MP to go.

"Yes there's no reason why he shouldn't, the whole point about the inquiry was to clear Shane Jones' name."
