Green MP wins Amnesty International award

By: Bruce Russell | Latest Political News | Saturday May 12 2012 23:21

Former Green Party MP Keith Locke has been awarded Amnesty International Aotearoa's Human Rights Defender award.

The award was presented tonight in a ceremony at the Auckland premises of the Human Rights Commission.

Deputy director at Amnesty International Rebecca Emery says when Amnesty speaks to communities of people in New Zealand who have sought its help and advice, Keith Locke's name is often mentioned as someone who has unfailingly assisted them.

She says the award recognises a life dedicated to the promotion and protection of people's human rights around the world.

Sixty-eight-year-old Mr Locke was a Green Party MP from 1999 until last year.
