David Carter rumoured to be next Speaker

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Political News | Thursday August 2 2012 16:21

Rumours are rife that Local Government Minister and veteran National MP David Carter is set to be the next Speaker in Parliament.

Current Speaker Lockwood Smith is widely expected to become our next High Commissioner to London.

Prime Minister John Key says it's "imminently possible" it'll happen, but no formal agreement has been made.

He says if and when any announcement is made, then he'll discuss options.

Mr Carter is believed to have been informally approached, but will only say he'll seriously consider any approach, if it happens.
