Prison staff to receive pepper spray training

| New Zealand News | Wednesday June 13 2012 5:22

Prison staff will be trained over the next few months in the use of pepper spray, as it's rolled out in jails across the country.

A trial last year saw the spray used just once, but on three other occasions the threat of being sprayed was enough to remedy prisoners' behaviour.

Corrections Minister Anne Tolley says that shows it's a suitable and safe tool for officers to have available.

But she says the safety of officers has to come first and that's why staff will have to get permission of supervisors to access it.

Anne Tolley says if the spray was attached to a guard's belt it would be too easy for prisoners to grab and use against staff.
