Disappointment climate change not considered

By: Nina Burton | New Zealand News | Wednesday May 2 2012 10:13

Huge disappointment at an Environment Court decision which has ruled climate change can't be considered, when granting coal mining consents.

Australian owned Buller Coal gained resource consent to build a mine near Westport last year that was appealed by the West Coast Environment Network.

Both sides sought a declaration on whether climate change should be considered as a factor in the consent.

Former Green MP Jeanette Fitzsimons says the ruling means environmental groups won't be able to cite climate change as evidence.

She says it's bizarre considering climate change is the most serious threat to the natural environment there's ever been.
