White Island could puff for some time to come

| New Zealand News | Saturday August 11 2012 6:29

White Island's volcano could be puffing steam for some time to come.

Experts are monitoring the volcano over the weekend, after it burst into life on Thursday night.

GNS' Craig Miller says it could be the beginning of an interesting phase.

"This might be the start of a longest term phase of activity, similar to what we had in the 1980s-1990s where there was more frequent eruptions of ash."

However Mr Miller doesn't expect too much fresh action in the coming weeks.

"In terms of the activity we would probably expect it to carry on the way it has for the last few days which is some small amounts of ash and steam, the relative amounts of which vary, sometimes there's more ash, sometimes there's more steam."

Mr Miller says in the long term, the latest eruption adds to scientists' understanding of the volcano.
