Bill for gay marriage dividing Pacific community

By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Wednesday August 8 2012 14:20

A Bill seeking to legalise gay marriage appears to be dividing the Pacific community.

Labour's Mangere MP Su'a William Sio says he will vote against his colleague Louisa Wall's Bill because there is wide opposition to it in his largely Pacific electorate.

It'll be a conscience vote, and Ms Wall says she totally respects his decision.

The Manurewa MP says her aim is to get out into the Pacific communities and explain no church will have to marry a gay couple.

Ms Wall insists it's about providing a marriage licence, not a religious ceremony.

"I'm asking for tolerance and understanding from all members of our community as we have this conversation, and that's what it is, it's a conversation, and we're only at the beginning of it as far as I'm concerned."
