Calls for Poverty Bay to go by Maori name

By: Annabel Reid | New Zealand News | Sunday April 29 2012 11:53

A Gisborne councillor has stirred things up on the East Coast, by calling for Poverty Bay to go by its Maori name, Oneroa.

Manu Caddie says the place name has always painted Poverty Bay in an unfavourable light.

Our reporter Murray Robertson says Poverty Bay was the first place James Cook named in New Zealand, and there's feeling that it shouldn't be given away lightly.

He says Manu Caddie's suggestion of a dual name for the bay has some merit, and may spark interest locally.

Though he says it'd be a brave council who pushed the wrong buttons of public opinion on it.
