Take care on BOP roads

Police are calling on motorists to take extra care on Bay of Plenty roads after heavy rain caused flooding and slips today.

The weather's improved - but many roads are still flooded.

Earlier today the Coromandel copped the worst of the weather with slips on State Highway 25 and the AA advising motorists to check their website for alternative routes.

Acting Senior Sergeant Owen O'Brien of Tauranga Police says they were inundated with calls about flooding in Papamoa, Mount Maunganui and Katikati.

"Just mainly the roads have been blocked and we've put some diversions in - just calling for people to be patient and take a bit of time."

MetService says the bad weather should ease from the west, finally clearing East Cape early tomorrow morning.

The weather in Bay of Plenty is now mainly fine, but flooding is still an issue because of the high tide due at 4.30 this afternoon.

Police have been at the intersection of State Highway 25 and Hot Water Beach Road for over an hour after one lane had to be closed.

The road is expected to be reduced to one lane for another two hours.

Police say no roads are completely closed and traffic management is in place.
