Activist Guangchen and family to be let go

By: Joe Gilfillan | International News | Saturday May 5 2012 15:35

The United States says China has agreed to let blind activist Chen Guangchen and his family leave the country soon, raising hopes of a resolution to a damaging diplomatic crisis.

The rights campaigner, who escaped house arrest and fled to the US embassy where he spent six days before emerging on Wednesday, has been in hospital since then.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is across Mr Chen's latest plans.

"He confirms that he and his family now want to go to the United States so he can pursue his studies."
