Sydney's Harbour Bridge turns 80

By: Anna Cross | International News | Sunday March 18 2012 11:28

Sydney's famous Harbour Bridge is celebrating 80 years today.

After years of proposals to link the city's south to its north, including a tunnel and a floating bridge, the Sydney Harbour Bridge opened to traffic on March 19, 1932.

To mark the birthday, a community day is being held, a day before the actual anniversary.

Around 14,000 workers played a role in constructing the bridge, which is crossed by 160,000 vehicles every weekday.
