A 71-year-old man has died after being struck by a large branch he was cutting from a tree.

The accident happened in the driveway of a farm property near Whangara, northeast of Gisborne.

The man was using a chainsaw to trim the tree yesterday afternoon.

He suffered fatal head injuries when he was crushed by the falling limb.
