A Christchurch man found guilty of sexually abusing young children has been sentenced to eight years, six months in prison.
In a move rarely seen in these types of cases, name suppression was also lifted for 71-year-old Dennis Newell.
Newell was sentenced in the Christchurch District Court this morning, for eight charges representing sexual abuse against children under the age of 12 - spanning ten years in the early 1980s.
Judge Paul Kellar told the court Dennis Newell's case has some chilling aspects, including that he continues to deny the offending. The abuse victims present in court this morning asked the judge to allow publication of Newell's name. |
