Man appears on historical sex abuse charges

By: Lesley Deverall | Latest Crime News | Wednesday May 30 2012 16:10

A man extradited from Australia has appeared in court in the Manukau District Court today on historical sex abuse charges.

59-year-old Robert Fowler is accused of 14 indecent acts and four indecent assaults, against eight female victims ranging in age from five to 45.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between 1985 and 1993 when Mr Fowler was living in Taumarunui.

They didn't come to light until 1996, two and a half years after Fowler had left New Zealand for Australia.

Fowler was arrested by Sydney police in April this year and was flown to New Zealand last night.

He's been remanded in custody for another court appearance in Taumarunui next month.
