Larry's Memo: May 28

Share |

By: Larry Williams | Monday, May 28, 2012

Fifty kiwifruit growers have illegally injected their vines with antibiotics, in a desperate attempt to combat the vine killing bacteria.

One farmer has injected 17 hectares of kiwifruit vines in a bid to save his plants from PSA.

TV One reported this last night.

The grower wouldn't be interviewed. I can see why. You just cannot defend that. The product is banned now and the risk is that you expose the entire industry.

Pretty stupid move.

SMOKING IN PRISONS

The ban on smoking in prisons looks to be having positive results.

According to a report there have been no major incidents and yet before the ban there were warnings from prisoners, prison advocates, and guards of riots and disorder.

None of this has happened.

SUPER

The PM confirms that they kicked the tyres of increasing the superannuation age but decided against it.

It is certain that the PM is more than aware of the pending fiscal 'time bomb' approaching. It is less certain why the PM being a 'money man' continues to ignore the obvious.

Even Grey Power is now coming around to conceding that something will have to be done.

With rapidly rising superannuation and healthcare costs - action is needed now to address the issue 30 years out.

CATHEDRAL

A few thousand people protested the demolition of the ChristChurch Cathedral over the weekend.

They were calling on the Anglican Church to immediately halt the demolition work.

A poll shows 54% favouring the demolition and 42% calling for it to be saved.

Here's the thing: former MP Jim Anderton said the restoration should go ahead regardless of cost.

It should be of note that it is the Anglican Church who actually owns the church and that Anderton says nothing about who will pay for this 'restoration whatever the cost'.

In other words - it will be somebody else, like the ratepayer or taxpayer.

======

RUDD

There are reports out of Australia suggesting that Kevin Rudd is set to make yet another attempt at rolling Julia Gillard.

Fairfax and News Limited say that a government whip is canvassing for votes to return Kevin Rudd to the leadership.

This is all quite extraordinary considering Rudd, who comes across as a bit of a narcissist, got hammered not that long ago.

He claimed then he wouldn't be back but true to form that looks like weasel words.

MALLARD

Trevor Mallard has had defamation papers served on him.

He Tweets ’this is the woman who gave false name and address when making an appointment at my office she served Collins papers’.

And he carries a photo of the woman.

What does this guy expect?

First Mallard and Little said that Collins wouldn't sue, then when she did they tried to hide.

If you want to play silly games, then it will in the end come back to bite you on the bum, and so it has.
