Larry's Memo: July 6

Friday, July 06, 2012

Ewen MacDonald was found not guilty of murdering Scott Guy.

The Crown case lacked evidence. No weapon. No forensics. It was all circumstantial.

The theatrical highly talented actor come defence lawyer Greg King did the rest. It was all about beyond reasonable doubt. It was easy pickings from Mr King.

Kylee Guy got the final punch in when she yelled out "he killed my husband" and left the court. That will linger in the public mind.

You be the judge.

V8s

The council predictably approved the $10m plus bill for the V8s at Pukekohe.

It was done and dusted before the council meeting yesterday. The numbers were in the bag.

The interesting thing is that they approved the expenditure even though they haven't seen the detailed cost and risk analysis.

Councillors were voting blind without full due diligence.

Now I'm for cities hosting events but the truth is on the V8s with its history of financial disaster, you wouldn't find a company board in the country that would have ticked this off on the information they had in front of them.

KIM DOTCOM

Dotcom claimed that the Vice President of the US was instrumental in taking him down. Joe Biden had the ear of the Hollywood moguls. This is all rather irrelevant.

Despite the defence case to kind of have the trial played out in this country as part of his extradition proceedings it doesn't and shouldn't work like this.

The FBI provides a summary of information against Dotcom and the judge simply decides if there is a case to answer.

If there is, he goes, if there isn't, I guess he stays.

WHALES

The Koreans are again going after the whales.

We don't have to like it but the fact is they legally entitled to do so.

They see others hunting whales, there is clearly local demand to eat this stuff, so they go and get them.

Yes there is a loophole with the "killing for scientific purposes' clause, but the fact of the matter is they can go and hunt them commercially if they want to.

Like Iceland and Finland.

BEAST OF BLENHEIM

The so called Beast of Blenheim is about to be released. Murray Wilson is not just high risk; he is likely to re-offend according to psychologists.

He's a sexual predator at the top end of the scale. It's pretty obvious then that he shouldn't be going anywhere.

He's wasted space - a very sick man - and he needs to be locked up. The Government is looking at "civic detention centres" for such beasts but that hasn't happened as yet.

It needs to and fast. It is irresponsible to let out onto the streets an animal like Wilson.
