Niva Retimanu - A law breaker?

Share |

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

To celebrate the New York Festivals International Radio Program & Promotion Awards ceremony happening today, we've done our usual thing and decided to dress up the office.

Of course newsreader Niva Retimanu never misses a chance to dress up and today was another perfect opportunity. However after we posted the photo on the Mike Hosking Breakfast Facebook page, Richard posted this...

"In the US that would not be considered "dressing up." Quite the contrary. Unless you were portraying Uncle Sam (albeit inebriated) in a parade, the outfit would be disrespectful to the flag and potentially subject to fine."

Well it seems Niva has broken the law. In fact the Public Law amended in 1976 states...

Section 4(j): No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However' a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

Who knew!
