Political Report: May 28

State Homie John Key always expected his second term in office to be tough and he saw just how tough it's going to be when he turned up to a ritzy hotel after the pick pocket Budget.

The rabble tried to stop his luncheon guests from getting in to hear what he had to say.

Meanwhile down country the Dipton Drawler Bill English was the guest of a big Aussie bank at breakfast. A well known economist Cameron Bagrie showed that he clearly missed out on the education system when he gave the Budget a big O, he said for awesome!

The Drawler was in a feisty mood, essentially telling protesting students to get a haircut and find a job and sneering that they could learn something from Greece when it comes to protesting.

But we haven't heard the last of the protesters yet. The tangata whenua are up in arms over the two and a half year prison sentences handed down to tatts Tame Iti and his loyal lieutenant on firearms charges.

The beak hearing the case rejected any innocent explanation of the military style training camps that led to the charges. Justice Rodney Hansen said a private militia was being established which he said was a frightening prospect.

Of course that's led to a chorus of condemnation from the usual suspects. Hone Harawira described the prison sentences as bloody ridiculous and he's planning to get on the blower to Amnesty International to have a look at the case. What good that'll do is anybody's guess.

Others are saying we've now got two political prisoners which of course is a load of old bunkum.

Public law expert and former ACT MP Stephen Franks says claims Iti and his army was more like a hapless, bungling and funny Dad's Army so it couldn't have been sinister misses the point.

Franks says they may have appeared like amateurs, but then others who've practised war games in the past, like the Symbionese Liberation Army, the Red Brigade and Baader Meinhof, looked like that too when they were starting out!
