Political Report: Donations - blessing or curse?

Share |

By: Barry Soper | Friday, September 21, 2012 6:00 AM

Let this be a warning to anyone who's thinking of contributing to a political party - make sure you're donation doesn't come back to bite you where the sun don't shine, as Trev Mallard would put it.

Or come to think of it, sunshine's an expression Luigi Peters frequently uses when he's challenging someone who disagrees with him which of course means it's a word that's a common part of his vocabulary.

In fact it was used a lot when Luigi was being chased by the media in 2008 when $100,000 mysteriously turned up in his party's bank account. It'd come from billionaire businessman Owen Glenn who was obviously left wishing he'd never become involved in the political process.

Since then he's wisely put his money into more philanthropic causes.

The internet giant Kim Dotcom's confused. Traipsing around Parliament the other day, he rather forlornly said he thought Banksie was his buddy and with good reason, he'd kicked in fifty grand to his unsuccessful Auckland mayoral campaign.

Sounding like Luigi four years ago, Banksie also doesn't want to know his benefactor. He's got a severe case of the three monkeys disease, trouble with sight - he didn't see Dotcom's cheques, trouble with hearing - his phone's off the hook, and he's certainly not talking about Dotcom, pushing his way through the media, refusing to answer questions that he clearly knows the answer to.

But ignorance is bliss and these two politicians, the recipients of the generosity of money moguls in the past, will in the future struggle to garner the donations they need to remain on the political landscape.

Admittedly Luigi's got a better chance of making it back at the next election with his ability to turn on the charm, like a political tap, during an election campaign.

But even turning on the jug for a cuppa at the next election's unlikely to do the trick for Banksie!
