Larry's Memo: September 7

Share |

By: Larry Williams | Friday, September 07, 2012 6:42 PM

The Government stay of proceedings on the SOE floats was a victory for the Maori Council, the Maori Party and anyone who is against the sales.

The Government is now in a tricky place to be. They have to placate Maori on the water and at the same time progress the part sales of the SOE's when the timing might not be conducive to get top dollar the shares.

The fact that the Government is rejecting the 'shares plus' scheme but still prepared to discuss the shares for Maori scheme is kind of saying that the concept is still on the table. It will wreck the price of the shares of course. You wouldn't and couldn't go to the market on that basis.

The 'shares plus' scheme pulled out of the air by the Maori Council, the Maori Party and the Waitangi Tribunal whereby Maori would get special power company shares with governance rights beyond those of other shareholders is delusional in the extreme. Why the government wants to even talk about it is scary.

The main beneficiary might be the potential investors. They can take a deep breath and analyse the value of the energy companies. Like Facebook they will be overhyped if they ever go to the market. That is now a big if. If they don't, it won't be a big deal anyway apart from egg on the face of the Government.

Which brings us to the bigger issue - the Maori grievance industry.

The Maori claim for the water has brought to a head the need to confront this relentless Treaty juggernaut that refuses to stop.

I think Kiwis are fair and reasonable people. That some Treaty grievances needed to be settled was fair enough. But it's gone beyond grievance mode and turned into greed mode. Maori are going after everything to the detriment of the country.

What we're witnessing is elite Maori claiming publicly owned water rights. We are seeing the economy bit by bit screwed and strangled and raped and pillaged.

It has been described as legalised looting by Maori tribal commercial interests.

Other examples just this week :

The ridiculous  wish list compiled by the Auckland Maori Statutory Board -- compulsory Maori in schools; bi-lingual street signs; insulation of Maori homes; transfer of ratepayers assets into Maori ownership.

The even more fanciful claim for the wind and it just goes on and on and on........

At some point you have to say enough. That point has arrived. Actually it arrived a while ago I believe, but the consequences of transferring the nations wealth and economic future to Maori under the guise of Treaty claims is like a cancer - eventually it kills you, in this case it will kill the country.

It's time to treat this cancer right now.
